It’s that time of year again when we are talking to clients about exciting refits and projects. One project we are looking forward to is for a 54’ motor yacht. We will be bringing her back to the Berthon shed for winter storage and a yacht refit. Berthon Spain have a special licence to road transport yachts of this size and with a warehouse offering a generous footprint of 2,500 square meters, it’s an easy job for us. We are fitting a new teak deck as well as the replacing the sub deck. This will involve removing all the deck hardware then refitting it at the end of the job, at which point she will look amazing.
Bringing your yacht to the Berthon storage for refit avoids the need for an expensive containment tent, reducing the hard storage costs significantly by around 60%. Not only is this a big saving, it also makes life a lot easier for the Berthon team, who have all their tools and machines to hand. Working on yachts in-house delivers huge time and motion benefits and means that the projects can be carefully controlled at all times by our project managers.
Storing your yacht for the winter is a fantastic way to stop the clock on any deterioration. Our standard procedure is to valet the yacht before she comes into storage, discuss her works list and action this, plug the yacht into shore power and then cover her in plastic to avoid any dust. We monitor our winter storage yachts on a weekly basis to ensure that they are charging as they should.
During the winter months whilst your yacht is in Berthon storage, we would normally service the engines and generator, sand and anti-foul the underside, making any paint or gel coat repairs that might be required, check the bow and stern thrusters, service the sea cocks, and give the yacht a general health check.
Once the new season arrives, we will re-commission the yacht. One of our captains will take her back to her berth if needed and we will then ensure that everything is super shiny and in fabulous working order for her owner’s use. Returning these yachts to their former glory and re-introducing them to their owners at the beginning of a new season is one of the very best parts of our job.
This winter, we will also be storing a lot of tenders in our custom-made tender racks. Again, these are all checked and washed on arrival and then safely stored under cover, for the winter. Our mechanical engineers can service all types of outboard motor and inboard engine and they can also check all the other systems on board at the same time.
