Berthon Spain service marine diesel engines throughout the year, especially in the winter when we go into overdrive. A marine engine is a fairly simple animal and as long as it’s well looked after and serviced in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines you should not experience problems during the yachting seasons.
We try to impress upon our clients the importance of carrying out good winter services on all engines and systems to ensure trouble free yachting. There is nothing worse than having to spend half of your precious holiday time in port having repairs or work done.
Our Mechanical Engineering Team are thorough with their servicing and nothing gets forgotten. In addition to oil, belts, impellers and filters, one of the items that often gets overlooked is the removal of heat exchangers and oil coolers. These periodically require a really good clean out as they get clogged with growth. If this is not done every couple of years, it can lead to serious overheating issues.
Fuel is also a big one as it’s very easy to pick up bad fuel. As a result, the fuel filters get clogged up and the engine will cut out. We ensure that not just the fuel filters are changed but that the whole fuel assembly is given a meticulous inspection and clean.
Water pumps are key to successful and trouble-free motoring and whilst most people will be aware that you should change the impeller, often the rotary seals are forgotten, and forgetting these leads to leaks and ultimately failure.
When the Berthon Team carry out a service, we will go over the whole engine in detail, inspecting every inch. If there is anything that needs attention, this will be immediately flagged to the client.
It’s important to know how to look over your engine to spot leaks and common sense will usually tell you if something is not right. Keeping the bilges clean allows leaks to be easily spotted. We are always happy to give a little tuition in what to look out for during the season and what you can do to ensure that your engines remain in fine fettle.
For peace of mind and a stress free season, contact Berthon Spain and let us take care of your engine servicing today.
