Massimo grew up in Sardinia, surrounded by an emerald-coloured sea, and like the ancient Sardinian population (also called Shardana) he felt since his youth that he belonged to the “People of the Sea”; his passions were the sea, boats and traveling.
A vivid interest in technical disciplines led him to graduate as an electrical technician, and then to study semiconductors at the renowned Polytechnic University in Milan.
For Massimo, Milan was too far away from the sea to stay there beyond his years of study. He travelled to South America and ended up settling in Northern Spain for a few years, before moving back to Sardinia. Here he set up his own business focussing his electrical skills in the home and industrial automation industry.
When he could buy his Bavaria 34’, it was natural for him to leave life on the ground, move to his boat and apply his technical skills to his and other boats. Soon his popularity grew in the sailing sector; this marked his turning point from the industrial and residential sector to the sailing industry. Massimo spent happily the following years alternating maritime electrical projects to chartering tourists as skipper on his own boat.
But that was not enough. He decided to move to the UK and perfect his English language skills to broaden his horizons and employment opportunities. He never stopped roaming around and visited several countries in Europe, South America, Asia and the Middle East. It was in Mallorca that he saw the opportunity to upgrade his maritime technical skills from small to mega yachts. Massimo soon relocated to Palma and started working for ADK (De Kaiser Marine) as Senior Project Engineer. He had the chance to deal with the complexity of electrical installations in the mega yacht industry. Since then, he has overseen technical projects such as installation and design of distribution boards, start and stop automation of machinery, installation of variable frequency drives. He has worked on board a variety of vessels including a J class sailing yacht, 48m Codecasa, 80m CRN and 65m Amels motor yachts.
Massimo also has experience with flag state and Lloyd’s compliance and survey both as employee and independent consultant for specialized companies or mega yacht owners.
He quickly gained a reputation as an excellent team player, a problem solver and is appreciated by all for his capacity to communicate and mediate when issues arise. We are delighted to welcome him to the management team at Berthon Spain as Head of Electrical.
