It would be an understatement to say that it has been an odd year and it has been far from plain sailing, but Berthon Spain have handled these choppy waters with confidence and grace. We are delighted by the number of clients who have been able to use their yachts this year despite it all, and with the help of modern technology we are keeping them all as involved as we can whilst they are absent.
We are now approaching the winter season which for Berthon engineering and the yacht care (guardiennage) teams is always very busy, and this year has been no exception. The technical department are currently working at full steam, preparing yachts for their Atlantic crossings as they set sail for the Caribbean season.
The guardiennage team are now winterising our yachts; tender storage under way, sails off for washing and servicing, running rigging removed, covers going on and dehumidifiers are being installed to make sure interiors stay nice and dry.
Our head of guardiennage, Addy Daly, is working closely with the yacht owners to draw up the winter work lists, sending pictures of what we think needs attention and making suggestions as to what we would recommend. As experienced captains and crew ourselves, we know well the items that might have been forgotten and equipment that should be serviced
The checks carried out by our guardiennage captain are extremely detailed and it takes a certain type of person to have such a wide-ranging technical knowledge of a whole host of yachts. Not only this but they must be able to jump aboard any yacht, sail or motor, know how she ticks, works and turns over within minutes, and be able to drive her.
With Berthon Spain’s exacting standards, all our yacht care team must have the finest of eyes to spot any imperfections. To quote Charles R Swindoll – “The difference between something good and something great is attention to detail”.
Our wonderful electronic app now means all our jobs – past, present and future – are well documented and scheduled. No more midnight panics about not having written down notes. All is now efficiently automated, ensuring no job, big or small, gets forgotten.
At Berthon we successfully carry out guardiennage on yachts up to 30 metres (100 ft). We are able to keep all of these yachts clean and in good working order for when their owners and or crew return for the new season.
